Camp Okavango is located on the remote Nxaragha Island in the heart of Botswana’s permanent Okavango Delta, surrounded by a maze of crystal-clear waterways, papyrus channels, and lush floodplains. Accessible only by boat or light aircraft, the camp offers a truly water-based safari experience in one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems. The setting is peaceful and immersive, with expansive Delta scenery, seasonal lagoons, and exceptional birdlife creating a strong connection to the natural environment.
Wildlife Experience
The permanent Delta surrounding Camp Okavango supports a rich variety of wildlife specially adapted to wetland habitats. Guests may encounter hippo, crocodile, elephant, red lechwe, sitatunga, buffalo, and a wide range of bird species including African fish eagles, jacanas, kingfishers, herons, and bee-eaters. While the camp focuses more on the Delta’s aquatic environment than traditional predator-driven safaris, nearby islands and floodplains can also reveal sightings of lion, leopard, hyena, and other plains game depending on seasonal conditions. The area is especially rewarding for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Accommodation
Camp Okavango offers an intimate safari experience with a total of 12 guest suites, including 11 standard safari suites and one spacious family suite. Built on raised wooden platforms overlooking the Delta, the accommodations feature ensuite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor lounge areas, comfortable bedding, mosquito netting, ceiling fans, and private decks designed for quiet wildlife viewing and relaxation. The family suite provides additional space and flexibility for families traveling together while maintaining the same relaxed safari style as the rest of the camp.
Design & Atmosphere
The camp is designed in a traditional safari style with natural timber walkways, thatched roofs, and open-air spaces that blend harmoniously into the island environment. The main lodge area includes indoor and outdoor lounges, dining spaces, a library, viewing decks, a firepit, and a swimming pool overlooking the waterways. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and authentic, offering a slower and more tranquil safari rhythm centered around the Delta’s water-based landscapes.
Activities & Experiences
Camp Okavango specializes in water-based safari activities that showcase the beauty and ecology of the Okavango Delta. Guided mokoro excursions allow guests to quietly glide through narrow channels lined with reeds and water lilies, while motorboat safaris provide access to larger lagoons and open waterways. Guided nature walks on nearby islands offer opportunities to track wildlife on foot and learn about the Delta ecosystem from experienced guides. Birdwatching is exceptional throughout the year, and seasonal fishing excursions are also available for guests interested in catching species such as tilapia and African pike.
Access
Camp Okavango is accessed by light aircraft from Maun to a nearby airstrip, followed by a short motorboat transfer to camp. Its location within the permanent Delta combines particularly well with land-based safari regions such as Moremi, the Linyanti, or the Central Kalahari for a diverse Botswana safari itinerary.
