Location & Landscape
Mashatu Lodge is located within the 31,000 ha (76,600 ac) Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana’s remote eastern corner, where Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa meet. Often referred to as the “Land of the Giants,” the reserve is defined by vast open plains, sandstone ridges, riverbeds, mopane forests, and iconic baobab trees. The landscape feels dramatically different from the Okavango Delta, offering expansive views, dry terrain, and excellent visibility for wildlife viewing throughout the year. As a private reserve, Mashatu allows off-road driving, night drives, and flexible safari experiences rarely possible in national parks.
Wildlife Experience
Mashatu is particularly famous for its large elephant population, hosting some of the largest free-roaming elephant herds found on private land in Africa. The reserve is also known for exceptional predator sightings, with lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, and occasional wild dog regularly seen throughout the area. Other wildlife includes giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, wildebeest, impala, and numerous smaller desert-adapted species. Birdlife is equally rewarding, especially for raptors, with the open terrain providing outstanding photographic opportunities and dramatic wildlife encounters year-round.
Accommodation
Mashatu Lodge features 14 luxury suites designed to blend comfort with a relaxed safari atmosphere. Each suite offers spacious interiors, ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, indoor seating areas, and private verandas overlooking the surrounding bush. Warm natural tones, African-inspired décor, and large windows create a comfortable connection to the landscape while providing a cool retreat between safari activities. The lodge layout ensures privacy while remaining close to the central guest areas.
Design & Atmosphere
The lodge combines classic safari character with contemporary comfort, creating an atmosphere that feels both welcoming and understated. The central guest areas include indoor and outdoor lounges, dining spaces, a bar, a large swimming pool, and shaded viewing areas overlooking a nearby waterhole. Traditional African design elements, natural materials, and open spaces reflect the rugged beauty of the surrounding reserve. The atmosphere at Mashatu Lodge is relaxed, social, and centered around exceptional wildlife experiences.
Activities & Experiences
Mashatu Lodge offers a wide variety of safari activities led by experienced guides. Traditional morning and afternoon game drives explore the reserve in open safari vehicles, while night drives provide opportunities to encounter nocturnal wildlife rarely seen during daylight hours. Off-road driving allows guides to follow wildlife more closely and create highly rewarding photographic experiences. Guided walks, mountain biking safaris, horseback safaris, and underground photographic hides are also available for guests seeking a more active or specialized safari experience. The reserve’s diverse terrain and low visitor density allow for highly flexible and immersive wildlife encounters.
Access
Mashatu Lodge can be accessed by scheduled or charter flights to the reserve’s private airstrip, or by road transfers from Botswana or South Africa. The reserve also combines particularly well with South Africa, the Okavango Delta, and Victoria Falls for a diverse Southern Africa safari itinerary.
