Location & Landscape
Camp Xakanaxa is located in the heart of Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, on the banks of the Khwai River in one of the Okavango Delta’s most ecologically diverse regions. Surrounded by permanent waterways, lagoons, floodplains, riverine forests, and open grasslands, the camp offers a classic Delta safari setting with exceptional scenery and year-round wildlife viewing. Its location within Moremi allows guests to experience both the aquatic beauty of the Delta and the rich game viewing for which the reserve is famous.
Wildlife Experience
The Moremi Game Reserve is regarded as one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, known for its high concentration and diversity of wildlife. Guests at Camp Xakanaxa regularly encounter elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, red lechwe, wildebeest, impala, and numerous antelope species. Predator sightings are excellent, with lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, and African wild dog all present in the region. Birdlife is equally rewarding, particularly around the waterways, attracting species such as African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, jacanas, and bee-eaters. The combination of wetland and dry habitats ensures consistently rich safari experiences throughout the year.
Accommodation
Camp Xakanaxa features a total of 12 spacious tented accommodations, including 11 standard safari tents and one two-bedroom family tent. Raised on wooden platforms overlooking the Khwai River and surrounding floodplains, the tents are designed in a classic safari style with canvas walls, ensuite bathrooms, comfortable twin or double bedding, ceiling fans, writing desks, and private viewing decks. The family tent provides additional space for families or small groups while maintaining the same authentic safari atmosphere as the rest of the camp.
Design & Atmosphere
The camp embraces a timeless safari aesthetic that reflects the spirit of traditional Botswana camps. Elevated wooden walkways connect the tents to the central lodge area, which includes open-air lounges, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a bar, viewing decks, and a swimming pool overlooking the Delta landscape. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and intimate, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness while enjoying attentive hospitality and classic safari comfort.
Activities & Experiences
Camp Xakanaxa offers a well-rounded safari experience with both land and water-based activities available throughout much of the year. Guided game drives explore the diverse habitats of the Moremi Game Reserve in specially designed safari vehicles, while motorboat excursions provide a unique perspective of the Delta’s channels and lagoons. Depending on seasonal water levels, guests may also enjoy birdwatching and photographic opportunities along the waterways. The diversity of ecosystems surrounding the camp allows for varied safari experiences, from predator tracking on open plains to peaceful wildlife viewing from the water.
Access
Camp Xakanaxa is accessed by light aircraft from Maun to the Xakanaxa Airstrip, followed by a short game drive transfer to camp. Its central Moremi location easily combines with other regions of Botswana, including the Okavango Delta, the Linyanti, and Chobe National Park, for a diverse safari itinerary.
