The Destination:
The Amazon rainforest accounts for more than half of the planet’s remaining tropical rainforest. The Amazon River, rising in the Peruvian Andes, flows east across northern South America before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. It carries more water than any other river on Earth, surpassing the combined flow of the ten next largest rivers. Recent studies, using Mount Mismi in Arequipa as the river’s source, suggest that the Amazon may be approximately 105 km (65 miles) longer than the Nile.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the largest protected flooded forest in the world and one of the most intact areas of rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon. During the rainy season, water levels rise significantly, flooding up to 85 percent of the reserve and making it accessible primarily by boat.
