Thornybush Game Lodge

Hoedspruit
Adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park, within the famous Thornybush Nature Reserve is the Thornybush Game Lodge, where unrivaled big game viewing is complemented by elegant accommodation and sublime cuisine.

Location & Landscape
The lodge is located within the private Thornybush Game Reserve in northeastern South Africa, surrounded by open savannah, riverbeds, acacia woodland, and seasonal waterholes that attract wildlife throughout the year. Thornybush shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to move freely across a vast protected ecosystem. The landscape combines classic Lowveld bushveld scenery with sweeping views across the Monwana River area and surrounding plains.

Wildlife Experience
Thornybush is renowned for excellent Big Five game viewing, with lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hyena, wild dogs, and a variety of antelope species regularly encountered during safari activities. The private reserve setting allows for off-road driving and more intimate wildlife encounters, while experienced guides and trackers create highly rewarding safari experiences throughout the year.

Accommodation
The lodge features luxury suites and family suites positioned privately within the bushveld overlooking the Monwana River and nearby waterholes. Accommodations include spacious bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, lounge areas, private decks, and plunge pools in selected categories. The suites combine contemporary safari comfort with warm African-inspired décor and open indoor-outdoor living spaces.

Design & Atmosphere
Thornybush Game Lodge blends classic safari lodge design with contemporary elegance through the use of timber, stone, leather, canvas, and natural textures. Open-air lounges, elevated viewing decks, lantern-lit pathways, and fire-lit evenings create an atmosphere that feels welcoming, refined, and deeply connected to the surrounding bush. Despite its larger size compared to more intimate camps, the lodge maintains a warm and relaxed safari atmosphere.

Activities & Experiences
Guests can enjoy morning and evening game drives, guided bush walks, birdwatching, wildlife photography, spa treatments, and relaxed afternoons overlooking the surrounding bushveld. Bush breakfasts, sundowners, and outdoor dining experiences further enhance the classic safari atmosphere, while family-friendly activities are also available for younger travelers.

Access
Thornybush Game Lodge is accessed via scheduled or charter flights from Johannesburg to nearby Hoedspruit or regional airstrips, followed by a road transfer into the reserve. Overland transfers are also possible, with the scenic drive from Johannesburg taking approximately five to six hours through the landscapes of Mpumalanga and the Greater Kruger region.
