Hoanib Valley Camp

Kaokoland
Hoanib Valley Camp is a remote, conservation-focused tented camp set in a hidden valley along a dry riverbed in Namibia’s wild Kaokoland, offering an intimate and immersive experience in one of the country’s most untouched and dramatic landscapes.

Location & Landscape
Hoanib Valley Camp is set within the remote Hoanib River Valley in northwestern Namibia, surrounded by vast desert landscapes, rugged mountains, dry riverbeds, and shifting dunes. Located within one of the most isolated wilderness regions in southern Africa, the camp overlooks a broad valley where desert-adapted wildlife moves between the ephemeral river systems. The scenery is dramatic and constantly changing, shaped by wind, light, and the contrast between desert plains and rocky escarpments.

Wildlife Experience
The Hoanib Valley is known for its rare desert-adapted wildlife, including elephants, giraffe, oryx, springbok, mountain zebra, and the elusive desert-adapted lion. Brown hyena and occasional cheetah sightings are also possible in the region. Wildlife viewing here is less about density and more about the remarkable adaptation of animals surviving within one of Africa’s harshest environments. The camp also supports conservation and research initiatives focused on desert wildlife and local communities.

Accommodation
The camp features a small number of spacious tented suites designed to blend naturally into the desert surroundings. Each suite offers panoramic valley views, private decks, en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor seating areas, and elegant safari comforts softened by earthy tones and natural materials. The accommodations are intimate and understated, emphasizing space, privacy, and connection to the surrounding landscape.

Design & Atmosphere
Hoanib Valley Camp combines contemporary safari comfort with minimalist desert-inspired design. Canvas, stone, wood, and soft natural textures reflect the colors and forms of the surrounding environment, while open lounge areas and shaded terraces create a calm and relaxed atmosphere. The camp feels remote and peaceful, offering a slower pace focused on nature, silence, and the immense scale of the desert landscape.

Activities & Experiences
Guests can enjoy guided nature drives in search of desert-adapted wildlife, visits to local Himba communities, scenic excursions through the Hoanib Valley, birdwatching, and conservation-focused experiences. The dramatic landscapes also make the camp particularly rewarding for photography and stargazing. The emphasis is on exploration, understanding the desert ecosystem, and experiencing one of Namibia’s last truly remote wilderness areas.

Access
Hoanib Valley Camp is typically accessed by light-aircraft flight from Windhoek or other safari regions in Namibia to a nearby airstrip, followed by a short transfer to camp. The flight over Namibia’s desert landscapes, mountains, and dry river systems is itself one of the highlights of the journey into this remote region.
