Location & Landscape
Somalisa Camp is set within the heart of Hwange National Park beneath a grove of acacia trees overlooking a seasonal floodplain and nearby waterhole. The landscape is defined by open savannah, teak forests, and sandy bushveld that stretches across one of southern Africa’s largest national parks. The camp’s location places guests in a quiet and wildlife-rich area where elephants frequently move directly through camp and gather around the water throughout the day.
Wildlife Experience
Hwange is particularly famous for its large elephant population, and Somalisa offers some of the park’s most intimate elephant encounters. Lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hyena, and a wide variety of antelope species are also regularly seen during safari activities. The nearby waterholes attract constant wildlife activity, especially during the dry season, creating exceptional opportunities for photography and close wildlife viewing.
Accommodation
The camp features spacious luxury tented suites, including family accommodation options, all designed to blend naturally into the surrounding bush. Each suite offers large viewing decks, elegant bathrooms with indoor showers and copper bathtubs, lounge areas, and open canvas fronts overlooking the floodplain. The accommodations combine classic safari comfort with understated luxury and a strong connection to the surrounding wilderness.
Design & Atmosphere
Somalisa Camp combines traditional safari style with contemporary touches through the use of canvas, wood, leather, and natural textures. Open-air lounges, elevated decks, lantern-lit pathways, and fire-lit evenings create an atmosphere that feels intimate, elegant, and deeply rooted in the safari tradition. Despite its refined comforts, the camp maintains a genuine wilderness atmosphere shaped by the constant presence of wildlife around camp.
Activities & Experiences
Guests can enjoy morning and evening game drives, guided walking safaris, birdwatching, and visits to hides overlooking nearby waterholes. The camp is particularly well known for its elephant experiences and excellent guiding, allowing guests to explore the diversity of Hwange at both a relaxed and immersive pace. Evenings are often spent around the firepit beneath the stars listening to the sounds of the bush.
Access
Somalisa Camp is accessed via a light-aircraft flight from Victoria Falls or Harare to a nearby Hwange airstrip, followed by a game drive transfer through the national park. The journey itself becomes part of the safari experience, with wildlife sightings often beginning before guests even arrive at camp.
